Biography
Dr. Tareq Al-Attas is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM). He earned his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Calgary, Canada, in 2024, and holds M.Sc. (2018) and B.Sc. (2016) degrees in Chemical Engineering from KFUPM. Prior to joining KFUPM, he worked as an R&D Associate and Project Manager at the University of Calgary, where he developed permselective gas diffusion electrodes that convert dilute industrial flue gas into valuable products.
His research focuses on electrochemical energy conversion, sustainable fuels, and advanced materials. He designs catalysts, gas diffusion electrodes, and ion-exchange membrane electrode assemblies that convert CO₂, methane, biomass, and nitrogen into fuels and chemicals such as hydrogen, carbon monoxide, ethylene, ethanol, and ammonia. His work combines catalyst and reactor development with in situ/operando spectro-electrochemical characterization and system-level techno-economic and life-cycle analysis, so that materials and process designs remain aligned with realistic cost and climate targets.
He has authored or co-authored peer-reviewed articles in high-impact journals including Energy & Environmental Science, Joule, Advanced Materials, Advanced Energy Materials, ACS Energy Letters, ACS Catalysis, and Chemical Engineering Journal. He is also a named inventor on several patent filings, including granted U.S. patents.
